Riverside Counselling Service were delighted to receive a donation of £1,000 from last October’s Half Marathon on Friday at Henley Rugby Club.
The Half Marathon has been running since 1983. In 2022 Henley Rugby Club in partnership with Krono:sports took over the organisation from Henley Rotary Club. Over the last three years it has been growing in popularity with more than 1500 runners taking part in the half marathon and smaller distance runs last year. Any profits made from the event go to local good causes.
The Half Marathon course follows a beautiful scenic route through Henley, over the famous bridge, and along the Thames Valley before returning beside the river, back over the bridge and up Heartbreak Hill, finally returning, once again, to the rugby club. As well has the Henley Half, runners can take part in a 10km, 5km or 1km Fun Run.
Craig Thornton from Krono:sports said, “The Half Marathon has grown over the last couple of years since we’ve taken it over. It’s great that we’re now able to give out some money to local charities and support local causes. This is good because the major marathons mainly focus on the national charities. I do think there is a link between mental health and exercise; running gives people something to train for and a goal. They now call it ‘mindful miles’ which gives people the chance to digest things away from screens and the pressures of life. The great thing about running, once you set off is you can detach and enjoy yourself and think about things in a different way.”
Riverside Counselling Service Trustee, Suzy Hobbs said, “Thank you to Henley Rugby Club, Krono:sports and all the runners who took part. We’re really pleased that this local sporting event chose Riverside to support that provides much-needed affordable counselling service in the community.”
